LEATHER & MORE
LEATHER
When it comes to providing protection and warmth to your hands there is no material that can match leather. It provides a very comfortable fit by molding to your hand and yet allows great flexibility.
Leather is an animal skin or hide of an animal that has been preserved by a chemical process called tanning. The leather may be dyed to a number of colors. Leather is a natural product used as clothing for centuries. Several different types of leathers are used for gloves and mittens. Hawkeye Glove Mfg. currently uses cowhide, pigskin, deerskin, elkskin, sheepskin, and goatskin. The majority of leather is from domestic sources.
LEATHER FINISHES
There are three types of leather finishes:
Grain is the smooth outside (hair side) of the leather. The hair is removed.
Split is the bottom piece of hide, which is produced when a thick skin is sliced into two thinner pieces. This piece has a suede finish on both sides. The top piece has the grain on one side and suede on the other side.
Suede is the inside of the hide, which has been buffed by an abrading machine.
LININGS
Four different linings are used in our gloves and mittens.
Thinsulate is a lightweight lining which retains warmth.
Sherpa is a man made fleece lining which provides normal warmth. It is a little bulky and is imitation of sheep skin.
Poly Fill is used in the Artic mittens. It provides protection against extreme cold.
Vellux is a thin lightweight lining, which provides some warmth but not recommended for cold environments.
